Taylor - 7 Didn't have much to do all game. Made a fairly comfortable save from a Gary Speed shot at the start of the game. Parnaby - 7 You can see McLeish is really trying to utilise our full backs in an attacking sense. Was up and down the pitch all game. Didn't really do much wrong all game. More than adequate cover for Kelly! Taylor - 7 Thought he played really well in the first half. Considering he was injured from about the 25th minute onwards, he played extraordinarily well. Jaidi will have a hard time getting back in the squad ahead of Taylor if he continues to play like that. Ridgwell - 6 Made a few crucial interceptions but misjudged a few headers. Looked fairly comfortable throughout but had a few nervy moments Murphy - 8 Great attacking and defending. Contender for MoTM for me. Larsson - 6 Fluffed a free kick you'd have expected him to put away last season. Looked a little rusty. Carsley - 8 Another contender for MoTM. Really stepped up to the plate as captain. Played some neat little passes and made some crunching tackles. I was surprised to see him drive forward on so many occasions too. Nafti - 8 Looked much more assured in the middle next to Carsley than he ever did alongside Muamba. A real determined performance McSheffrey - 6 Didn't really have much influence on the game. Whipped in a couple good crosses and made a couple runs down the left wing, but never really got past Sun Jihai. McFadden - 8 The most skillful player in this division I reckon. Very comfortable on the ball. Gets you out of your seat when he's running with the ball. Would be my man of the match. Never stopped running or trying. Bent - 7 Did the job he was there to do. Win headers. Didn't win them all but I'd say 75% he owned. Had two fairly decent chances but nothing you can really blame him for missing. Subs: Phillips on for McSheffrey - 7 Don't think he touched the ball until he scored! Tucked the ball away like a true pro. O'Connor on for Bent - 6 No real influence on the game. Although he did highlight just how many headers Bent was winning in comparison... Jerome on for Larsson - 6 Made a few good runs in behind the defenders but again didn't really have much influence on the game Positives from the game
Negatives from the game

Bit unfair on o'connor i think, he got the assist with a flick on, got a shot off as soon as he came on, thought he was a bit more invloved than you say. personally i wouldnt give McFadden MoTM he played well but thats what you should expect from arguably the best player in this division. I'd have given it to nafti if it wasnt for a few hospital balls, and so i think carsley was MoTM. (This opinion was brought to you by chris_langs, not Bluenose4life) Edit: Did i see them give Ridgewell MoTM on sky sports? or am i mistaken |

on skysports ridgewell got man of the match. i thought nafti deserved it more than anyone on the field. a real positive performance from him. looked comfortable on the ball all the time, no mistakes from him and some neat passing. but i guess overall it was a good performance. sheffield utd have one of the best defences in the league, maybe even the best, but we still gave it our all. so i think we've got the hardest team out of the way for now, we should expect more from our next league game. |

I'm not sure how Ridgwell got MoTM. I thought he was quite poor overall  Maybe I was being too harsh on him? The only time Nafti let himself down was when he was passing further than 15 yards. Every "long" ball he was playing went nowhere. Other than that he was excellent. |

I agree Nafti should have got MOTM, a solid display from him. Ridgewell played well but did his customary '1 mistake a game' luckily the forwards in this league are'nt as clinical. A good 1st half performance we passed the ball well but we could'nt get the strikers facing the goal with the ball. McSheffrey played well but was'nt in the game too much. I give the whole team a 7, and Nafti an 8. |

Taylor-6 Didn't really look as comfortable as Kenny. Paranaby-5 Looks likes he foul throws? Taylor-7 Kept hobbling and played well. Fair Play. Ridgewell-7 Didn't do anything wrong in my ideas. Best i've seen him play. Murphy-4 Gave me the 'ump just watching him. Throws were rubbish and doesn't know how to attack without bombing it. Larsson-5 Looked off all day. One or two neat touches but nothing I wouldnt expect from a Championship winger. Nafti-9 Motm easily. Did everything with effort and assisted everybody. Carsley-8 Good solid game from the ex-toff. Loved the commitment. McSheffrey-4 Woeful. Hope he picks up. Thankgod for Owusu-Abeyie. Bent-6 What did he do that Super Kev Couldn't? McFadden-8 A different class. Most skilful player in a blues shirt in a while. Subs: O'Connor-6 Didn't do much (didn't have the chance) but looked alot more agile and eager. Phillips-6 Goal sneak extraordinaire. Did he even touch the ball before then? Jerome-6 Quick but a little sloppy but he is only young. |

Taylor 7 - not much to do. Came off line ok and decent kicking Parnaby 6 - did fine Taylor 7 - good considering injury after 25mins Ridgewell 7 - ok, still get worried sometimes Murphy 6.5 - still too quick to lump it up the wing, but had lots of possession. Can not thow as well as he thinks he can. Larson 4 - Was he even playing in the second half? Carsley 8 - Cool on the ball. Good interseptions and runs forward MOM Nafti 7.5 - Neat on the ball, committed, good tackling McSeffrey 5 - A couple of good crosses, but was generally anonymous Bent 6 - early promise. Won some good flick ons, neat on the ball, but not anough going forward. McFadden 6 - did very little until he went on the wing. Clumsy on the ball around the box, and fell over too easily. O'Connor 7 - got in some good positions, flicked on for the goal Phillips 5 (9 for the goal though) - Touched the ball once in his first 25mins. Superb finish though, and that is what he is here to do. Jerome 7 - Brings much more urgency to the game. Possibly should start in stead of McSheff. I though Sheff did very well, especially defending, pretty much route one, but we'll have to get used to that as much as we have to try to stop doing that ourselves. I thought we tried to play some football, but wit hthe wingers so off form it was very difficult. |

Sky must have been watching it on telly, like many others it seems. Ridgwell was awful imho. mistake after mistake and so easily knocked off the ball, or out of the challenge for a ball. We need a good centre back. Taylor on theother hand was very good. Poor display by Blues, but (cliche warning) if we can play that badly and get 3 points, maybe the season bodes well. Well done super Kev, you should open a striker coaching school. You know the art better than almost anyone I know. |

Taylor-7 Some good saves in the game and a clean sheet cant be sniffed at Paranaby-6 Good cover for Kelly, but wont keep Kelly out Taylor-7 Well played, better defending then Jaidi, but lacking the attacking play as much Ridgewell-7 Well played, cut a few crucial balls out, made one or two mistakes but everyone does Murphy-7 Well played going up front aswell as defending Larsson-5 Off performance all day, not quite what i would expect of him, fluffed a free kick, bad attitude Nafti-8 Great performance, much better then last year, has blended with Carsley really well, just needs to improve his long balls Carsley-8 Good solid game, moved around the pitch well, had a shot on target, blends with Nafti excellently McSheffrey-6 Not his best performance but some good balls played into the box, should be given another chance Bent-7 Played resonably well, had one or two shots blocked, but Phillips will replace him next game i think, and he will become back up for Mcfadden McFadden-7 A class above everyone else, played resonably well upfront and then well on the wing, quite a bad miss on the rebound however Subs: O'Connor-7 Assisted Phillips for the goal, better performance compared with last year Phillips-7 Great finish but didn't really influence much until then Jerome-7 Played well out of posistion |

Anybody who didnt rate O'Connor today must have only seen the game on TV. Both he and Jerome added much needed pace and vigour to the game. Even when not on the ball they gave Sheffield plenty to think about and did more in 10-15 mins as subs than Bent did in 75. It really does seem like it is reinvigorated O'Connor this season. Don't want to pre-judge Bent but I didnt want him signed as I didnt think he was needed and nothing today changed my mind. |

It really is funny how differently people see the game, I though Nafti was way too negative, every time he got the ball he was looking to play it back to Parnaby or Murphy, also gave the ball away on a couple of occasions that could of caused goals. I also thought that although Bent won a fair few headers, his overall play was shabby and his prescence caused us to play too much hoofball. I thought Tiny was immense considering his injury, Carsley will be top player in this division and the team looks much more impressive once Jerome is introduced..........the less said about Seb, the better!!! Todays late goal is just papering over a very shabby performance and if the inclusion of Bent is going to mean more long ball, then it's gonna be a very rough season!!!! |

...........and dekaz- KRO must of been watching a different game, both full backs were assured and Kelly will struggle to get back in, infact I have it from a reliable source that AMc prefers Parnaby to Kelly! I'll have some of what you're smokin'!! Also have to say, although it grieves me, Wisel was quite correct, Ridgewell gave the ball away in dangerous areas, Tiny showed him how to defend properly. |

Can't agree with that thought Ridgewell and the other defenders had good games. Carsley and Nafti played well, Nafti doesn't always get the credit he deserves, though doesn't deliver the 'killer ball' that a more creative midfielder could do. Mc Fadden will be head and shoulders above most players in this league, Bent was largely ineffective as were Larsson and Mcsheffrey. We looked much better with Phillips, O'connor and Jerome on the pitch. All in all it was a decent start, Sheffield will be among the front runners and I thought they looked very strong defensively. So a win is a win but we can get better. |

I thought we were poor today, too much long ball which Sheffield won most of,we did not win second ball all the time,no craft,no vision, generally very poor. |

Mcfadden was MOTM for me, we MUST keep him but not sure we will if prem managers watched this game, Sheff utd imo will be in the top 6 this season so im not too worried about scraping out a 1-0 win, nice finish by phillips & btw larsson can go if he is gonna play like that, his attitude was terrible, pulling out of challenges, not working half as hard as last season, can play QOA in his position or DJ. |

Anybody else think he looked like a player playing to get a move by default, because he wont get one for his sparkling displays if that's how he intends to play  |

Tight between Carsley and Murphy for MOM but for me Carsley just gets the nod. Don't know about anyone else but Kevs goal seemed to go in slow motion before it hit the back of the net! Good start though and relieved to get the 3 points. :Blues: |

Taylor - 7 - Nothing to do really, but was there when called upon. Parnaby - 7 - Impressed, very strong and didn't give anything to their left winger. Martin Taylor - 8 - Very good game, strong and calm when called into action. Considering he had 2 big guys to deal with he was good. Ridgewell - 7 - Good game, solid. One very dodgy moment but overall he did well. Murphy - 8 - Really good, dominated his flank and hardly any balls from the flanks came across at all. Larsson - 5 - Looked very disinterested. Very quiet. If he wants to stay he better come out and make a statement soon, because I can tell the fans will turn on him quickly. Carsley - 8 - Excellent in the centre, was there at exactly the right time. Him and Nafti bossed the game in the middle. Nafti - 9 - Really good, great energy and looked comfortable with Carsley. McSheffrey 6 - Never really in the game. Game passed him by. Bent - 6 - Nothing too special, didn't win enough against the two bruisers at the back to justify being a target man. McFadden - 8 - Really good, linked up play brilliantly. Great first touch at times, one fantastic back heel to McSheffrey. SUBS - Jerome - 6 - Nice runs, never really got into the game. Phillips - 7 - What a great finish. Could count the touches he got on one hand though. O'Connor - 7 - Impressed me, strong, quick - different player from last season. |
